Turns a baking deck back into a room

Plattekloof's view decks and patios are usually north- or west-facing for the same reason the lounge glass is — to catch the outlook. That's wonderful at sundowner hour and brutal at two in the afternoon. A folding-arm awning solves this on demand: crank or motor it out for shade over the table, retract it fully in winter to let the low sun back in, no posts interrupting the view either way.

Fabric is solution-dyed acrylic, built to hold colour under Cape sun, with a projection typically in the 3–4m class over wide spans — enough to shade a full outdoor table and the doorway behind it.

  • Full cassette (fabric and arms sealed away) for weather-exposed decks, or semi-cassette/open mounting
  • Motor plus wind sensor is the responsible spec — auto-retract before a gust arrives
  • Crank handle available where motorisation isn't wanted
  • LED lighting and a vertical drop-valance available on premium lines

Honest limitations

This is a shade product, not a rain product — it copes with light drizzle at a pitch, never storm rain or standing water. Fixing substrate (brick, timber or steel) matters, so we assess it on site rather than quote blind.

The wind argument, made properly

Cape Town's summer south-easter reaches Plattekloof's ridge as reliably as it reaches the coast, and an awning left open in a sudden gust is the single most common way homeowners lose one. Every exterior awning we fit here goes out with a wind sensor as standard, not an option — it's cheaper than a replacement, and it means you never have to remember to bring it in before you leave the house.
